Overview:
The Student Accessibility Services Coordinator and Academic Advisor provides equal opportunity to students with disabilities to ensure equal access to education programs, services, and benefits, and to promote a welcoming campus environment for students requiring accommodations. The Coordinator advocates for students with disabilities and seeks to empower them to become their own and best advocates. The Coordinator provides technical assistance and guidance to faculty about providing accommodations to students. The position also provides personal counseling, education, professional programming, as well as services and resources for students with disabilities to create inclusive learning environments. Serving as the main disability representative and voice on campus, this staff member's primary focus will be the education of students, parents, faculty, and staff centered around standards, practices, letters of accommodations, and appropriate services provided through programs, workshops, and personal meetings. This role operates with a post-secondary disabililty framework and accommodation determinations are made through an individualized, interactive process. The Coordinator will also provide academic advisement and support to a designated group of undergraduate students.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and maintain all records and services for students with disabilities and provide the necessary academic, well-being, and residential accommodations in compliance with university policies and applicable law.
- Coordinate ongoing support for all students who receive accommodations. Some examples include: Coordinate services for students with temporary disabilities and inform faculty, administrators, and key campus departments regarding the needs of students; locate accessible book formats for students.
- Supervise the Test Center, managing proctor schedules, exam flow, and educating faculty on utilizing testing services.
- Mentor students with disabilities in every aspect of their collegiate journey; teach students self-advocacy skills and personally connect them to academic, career, financial, and other resources available on campus.
- Consult and partner with Academic Affairs (Provost, Deans, Academic Administrators, Faculty), Admissions Office, Facilities Department, and the Division of Student Life to provide assistance and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities; promote a universal design for online and on-ground learning, and properly implement accommodations in compliance with university policies and applicable law.
- Adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act regulations, as well as other applicable federal and state law, in engaging in the interactive process to determine reasonable accommodations.
- Provide disability awareness training for campus constituencies and advocate for systems change through participation on inclusion and disability-related councils, committees, and planning meetings.
- Use online programs, computer applications, and other technologies to assist students with disabilities with reasonable accommodations.
- Provide academic program coaching, course registration guidance, as well as serve as a liaison with academic departments and academic services.
- Assist in student retention and persistent efforts as determined by the department and University.
- Participate in New Student Orientation, Admissions recruitment days, and other campus-wide events as necessary.
- Teach a minimum of the First Year Seminar Program (FYSP) course each fall semester (FYSP1000).
- Effectively use EAB Navigate and Banner tools for assessment, evaluation, and registration results in determining student academic performance.
- Complete comprehensive semester and annual reporting including, but not limited to, academic achievement, service, membership and retention, and policy compliance.
- Evening and weekend availability for programs and special events.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in counseling, education, human resources, student personnel, or a related field is required.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in disability services required.
- Minimum two years’ experience in counseling and advising, preferably in a higher education environment.
- Thorough knowledge of university student development theory, and academic advising, retention and persistence programs and services.
- Knowledge of FERPA, Section 504, of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Housing Act, and other applicable state and federal laws, accessibility standards, as well as legal decisions related to assistive technology in post-secondary institutions.
- Consistently display a high degree of independent judgment, composure and confidentiality when leading students, faculty, staff, and community members to create usable, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments.
- Ability to understand and interpret disability documentation.
- Ability to work with diverse populations including sensitivity to the needs of individuals with disabilities.
- Proven ability to safeguard sensitive and confidential information.
- Knowledge of current trends in higher education and technology, experience with student management database systems, and the ability to enhance the use of technology and other resources to meet students’ educational and personal needs.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills with a high energy level.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational, time management, and public speaking skills.
- Ability to work a varied schedule with flexible hours; weekend/evening hours may be required.
- Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and follow through on assignments.
- Ability to drive or have reliable transportation to travel on behalf of the University.
- Reliably and confidently interact with a wide array of campus constituents, including but not limited faculty, academic administrators, and students.
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds.
- Experience working with underrepresented college students, first-generation students, and high-risk students.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective personal, social, career, and student development programs to individuals and groups.
- Customer-service oriented and student-focused with the ability to work with diverse populations.
- Collaborative approach and ability to understand, articulate, and promote core values of the institution.
- Ability to collect, analyze, write and interpret statistical data and departmental reports.
- Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to travel on behalf of the University is required.
