Overview:
Robert Morris University (RMU) is transitioning to an in-house management model for the UPMC Events Center and is seeking an experienced, driven Sales Manager. This role is vital to our mission of establishing the entire UPMC Events Center—including the arena and conference spaces—as a premier destination for corporate, private, university, and large-scale entertainment events. Reporting directly to the UPMC Events Center General Manager, the Sales Manager will lead an aggressive sales program to maximize the utilization of our state-of-the-art facilities. Facility Overview Opened in May 2019, the 161,000 square foot UPMC Events Center is the proud home of RMU Colonial Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Women’s Volleyball. The venue features: • A 4,000+ seat arena for large-scale events, concerts, and athletic competitions. • The 11,000 sq. ft. UPMC Health Plan Conference Center, offering customizable space and state-of-the-art technology. • On-site catering services and proximity to the Pittsburgh West/Airport Corridor.
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary sales representative for the entire facility, including corporate, private, and large-scale arena events at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Conduct daily cold calling, solicitations, and research to identify appropriate groups, promoters, and organizations.
  • Represent RMU at trade shows and industry functions to create widespread venue awareness.
  • Respond promptly to inquiries regarding rental rates and space availability for the arena and conference center.
  • Conduct facility tours and deliver formal presentations to potential clients, promoters, and exhibition managers.
  • Negotiate contract terms and rates, preparing written proposals and cost estimates.
  • Finalize all booking arrangements and ensure internal departments are fully briefed on client requirements.
  • Maintain and grow effective relationships with the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Chambers of Commerce, area hotels, and service providers.
  • Monitor competitor products and pricing to ensure the UPMC Events Center remains a market leader across all event types.
  • Assist in developing sales/marketing budgets and implementing follow-through procedures.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager and facility staff to ensure seamless customer service and streamlined work processes.
  • 3% commission. Only applies to external events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is required.
  • 3–5 years of professional sales/event experience in a conference center, convention center, arena, or similar multi-purpose venue.
  • Proven track record of meeting sales goals and objectives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and data processing applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with an eagle eye for detail.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as dictated by the event calendar.
  • Willingness to travel for business development as required by the General Manager.
