Associate Athletic Director, Compliance

Overview:
The Associate Athletics Director for Compliance serves on the Athletics Cabinet, responsible for supporting the Vice President and Director of Athletics in implementing both day-to-day policies & processes related to NCAA, Conference and institutional rules compliance. This position will lead the departmental athletics compliance program by creating, maintaining and monitoring a compliant environment that results in clear institutional control of all athletic programs relative to Conference and NCAA legislation as required by NCAA Division I membership. Position is responsible for fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout all levels of the organization, including but not limited to, staffing and programming.
Responsibilities:
  • Maintains day-to-day leadership and oversight of the Office of Athletic Compliance.
  • Serves as liaison between Department and University offices including Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar/Academic Services, and Residence Life for purpose of ensuring compliance with NCAA, Conference and University rules and regulations.
  • Oversees compliance with the NCAA and Conference rules and regulations relating to recruiting, eligibility, admissions, financial aid, practice and playing seasons, and awards & benefits.
  • Conducts rules education and training program within Department of Athletics and across the University including disseminating new legislation information.
  • Researches, disseminates and maintains a thorough and continual familiarity with all NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that athletic academic processes adhere to NCAA, conference and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Oversees Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) program.
  • Oversees the distribution, purchase, management and accounting for the department’s textbook program.
  • Reports any violations to the President, Director of Athletics, Legal Affairs/General Counsel and Faculty Athletics Representative.
  • Detects, investigates and documents possible NCAA violations/infractions. Assists with rule interpretations.
  • Meets with the Vice President for Legal Affairs/General Counsel as needed, to discuss issues of Athletics Compliance, NCAA legislation, and other pertinent topics.
  • Serves as the department liaison to the University Athletics Council, working directly with the Faculty Athletics Representative.
  • Oversees and manages the student-athlete code of conduct and serves as liaison for department to Student Life for violations of university code of conduct.
  • Serves as department liaison with the Office of Equity and Inclusion; serve department as a member of campus groups and committees dedicated to equity efforts across campus.
  • Strengthens and builds upon institutional efforts to cultivate policies, practices, and structures that ensure an inclusive, equitable, and hospitable environment for student-athletes, staff, and coaches; develops strategies that advance the overall goals for diversity, inclusion and belonging for the athletics department.
  • Leads efforts on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Review Framework; engages campus and athletic department partners to complete review on an annual basis; oversees the annual diversity and inclusion planning and reporting process, including tracking and reporting on all diversity and inclusion metrics and progress.
  • Leads department efforts to create an environment of collaboration and equality in addition to providing programming, education and learning about all aspects of diversity and inclusion for student-athletes, staff and coaches.
  • Completes administrative tasks for the Department of Athletics, including: • Prepares NCAA, conference, and University forms and reports. • Maintains relevant computer databases and records. • Represents athletics at various conference, community and university functions or events, in absence of the Director of Athletics. • May serve as game management administrator for selected events. • Assists the Director of Athletics in special projects. • Works directly with Athletics Cabinet on planning and execution of strategic initiatives for department. • Supports department in the establishment and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, goals and objectives. • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reporting structure: The position has a dotted-line reporting structure. The position reports directly to the Vice President and Director of Athletics on all compliance-related matters in his/her capacity as Athletics Compliance Officer. The position also has a “dotted-line” reporting to the General Counsel, when necessary to escalate compliance or other risk management concerns that cannot be resolved in collaboration within the athletics department. Tasks related to supervising: • Serves as supervisor for the Compliance and NIL Coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree with an emphasis on Sports Administration, Student Services, Higher Education Administration required. Masters or Juris Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience in a collegiate athletics compliance or support services program and rules/regulatory issues.
  • At least two years of administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics required; preferably at a NCAA Division I Level.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends; some traveling required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to NCAA and University rules and regulations; ability to understand, interpret and provide regular compliance-related information sessions.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Compliance Assistant, ARMS or other compliance software programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals of all levels; ability to work with a diverse group of students, coaches, faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated solid planning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated high personal and professional standards.
  • Committed to the mission and core values of intercollegiate athletics.
  • Excellent computer skills; ability to compile data, prepare, write and review reports.
